Conventions

Conventions of a music video

Here are the general conventions of a music video. These conventions are addressed in a majority of the  music videos and form the basic formation of the music video. these conventions are however sometimes broken challenging the traditional, stereotypical music video.

Examples of these conventions;

Here is a very conventional music video, i think this video demonstrates all the conventions, we see live performance a narrative, three costume changes, multiple shooting locations and a wide range of camera movements and angles. Additionally this particular performance is of the pop music genre, meaning the lighting and mise en scene of the shots relate to the fast, bright tempo of the soundtrack.

Another performance, this one more traditional from 1993. Again this follows the same conventions mentioned meaning there are 3+ locations and costume changes, as well as a live performance and a sort of narrative. In contrast this music genre is a bit more alternative/ soul, seen through a change in lighting and costume choices. However fundamentally they follow the same conventions.
